How honey bees survive winter

After we had all this snow & rare freezing weather here in Cornwall, we were very happy that our bees survived. Throughout winter and on every sunny winter day our bees were very active. There is quite a lot of gorse flowers throughout winter & some other hardy flowers around so we think they were […]

Fruiting hedges

We’ve been given 30 of each of these beautiful hedging bushes / trees by E-forest  – Hawthorn, Sea buckthorn, Cherry Plum, Crab Apple.  They provide wonderful flowers for the bees & pollinators and fruit for us and the birds, see photos below. We are going to plant some of them in our stone wall Cornish hedges which are […]

Mombretia / Crocosmia

We have a patch of these flowers in our orchard. They are very beautiful but apparently, they are a non-native invasive weed, originally from South Africa. Here is information taken from www.invasiveweedsolutions.co.uk Sounds so serious for such a pretty flower. Have removed their suggestions for chemical treatment though as we love our bees! We did dig […]

Solstice party

On 20th Dec we held a party to celebrate Solstice, our new shed and to thank ourselves and all our volunteers for our hard work this year. We didn’t advertise it widely as we wanted to keep it small, so just told volunteers and friends by mostly word of mouth. Every year we aim to […]

Our Cornish Hedges

Our orchard is surrounded by traditional Cornish Hedges. As the entire land used to be covered with brambles, hogweed & ivy, most of the hedges ended up being completely covered by these hardy plants so we are spending time clearing the cornish walls. I have been researching how is best to look after our hedges […]

Companion / Guild planting

Various plants can be planted around the fruit tree which help it to grow even better, give more production and has various other benefits. This is called companion planting or Guild planting. A fruit tree guild is the building block of an edible forest garden. This lovely idea was given to us by Newquay Community Orchard […]

Our bees

We have put 2 beehives into our community orchard. Duwayne built both the beehives, one is a Kenyan top bar hive and the other, a Warre Hive. Both have top bars which are quite different from the conventional frame beehives. The bees create the comb from the top bars like they would in the wild. […]

St Ives Skatepark Project

A few of us are extending our energies & fundraising abilities to the skatepark that is right next to our community orchard & needs an upgrade. It’s a very old-fashioned skatepark made from wood, steel & tarmac, is very expensive to fix and most local kids who can travel, go to other skateparks instead of using […]
