We’ve got very into making dead hedges which are so easy to make and are wonderful for wildlife.
It simply involves putting in 2 rows of stakes and then piling branches and twigs, any material really that gets collected from clearning or pruning. Wildlife uses this space to shelter, the hedge rots away so is great for all sorts of ecosystems but is easily maintained by regularly putting sticks on top
We started our hedge with some of our tree stakes and bamboo we had on hand and started filling it with branches, prunings anything we could find and within a couple work parties we’d done enough to create a good hedge. Our Duke of Edinburgh boys whittled branches with axes to make stakes. We have 2 dead hedges, one surrounding a herb garden and another around a vegetable garden. We just need a gate now!
