We had a lovely arty workshop in the Orchard on Sunday 20th September 2020 taken by local artists Imogen Frost and Annabel Wilkes. Free for all and sponsored by our National Lottery Awards grant.
Participants created a unique, photographic sunprint using natural resources from St Ives community orchard and a special Anthotype process.
It was a community workshop for both adults and families to learn the science behind fruit having light sensitive qualities to produce images and to create a sun print using a special Anthotype process. They explored the orchard, collecting berries/apples and natural materials to make a light-sensitive mixture to coat onto paper. Then pressed these between perspex & cardboard and took them home and exposed it for several weeks on a window sill, where it slowly produced an image underneath the materials.
Annabel Wilkes is a local printmaker who runs workshops form her home cabin studio teaching a range of printmaking techniques and alternative photographic processes. See www.annabelwilkes.co.uk
She works part-time at Tate St Ives as a Learning Facilitator which involves setting up and running workshops for families. Annabel loves exploring new and exciting techniques and enjoys sharing her knowledge, building confidence in others who would like to try new creative skills. Working with the community & environment and nature is key to her own artwork and she is delighted to run workshops at the community orchard where there is abundant inspiration and resources for all to enjoy.
Imogen Frost is an artist who uses traditional photography processes from the 19th century to explore magic and illusion. She is Assistant Learning Curator at Tate St Ives where she supports the curatorial team in creating a diverse and exciting programme of events and activities. At the heart of both her profession and Artistic practice is community – bringing people together to have immersive, educational and enjoyable shared experiences that support wellbeing and mental health through creativity. Imogen began volunteering at the St Ives community Orchard through lockdown which has inspired more nature into her practice and she is excited to be able to share this through this workshop.
